Mark J.'s 1970 Chevelle

3 May 2021

Mark J. has owned his 1970 Chevelle Super Sport for 3 years and is the third owner. He's purchased trim, hoses, and misc. parts from us to update his car. Great car, Mark!
Here's his story...

I grew up in the 70s working on 60s and 70s muscle and classic cars when I started working as a mechanic while going to school. My friends had muscle cars and I had a 1972 Buick Riviera Gran Sport that I later sold to buy a boat, a big mistake. I was so disappointed in what I did, I stayed away from those cars for years, I loved my Riviera.

Fast forward to October of 2017, we were on vacation at our cabin in N.C. and my fiancée convinced me we needed to go on a trip to Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville, TN. I didn't want to go because I had stayed away from those cars for years because of the past experience and told her I would get the fever if I started getting around those cars again. There were over 90 beautiful muscle and classic cars there. Something triggered inside me, and I knew that the fever was back. I had to have my dream car 1970 Chevelle Super Sport.

After months of searching, and finding many driving and not many collector quality Chevelles, I finally found my 1970 Chevelle SS at Motor City Classic Cars in Vero Beach, FL. I am now the third owner of this numbers matching, restored per build sheets, Oshawa, Canada built January 9th1970, SS396 / 350hp 4 speed M21 example. This Chevelle had a frame-off rotisserie restoration 8 years before I bought it. I contacted the second owner, who knows the first, and learned of the history of the car. This was in both of their car collections since new- they were high school buds.

I have owned it for 3 years and have totally restored it again, as I like these new conditions for show. I do drive it on weekends occasionally as weather allows and totally enjoy the torque and horsepower of these big blocks. Shows are a great place to meet like-minded people.

Luckily, being a Canadian-built car, the GM Heritage build sheet packet was available to authenticate the cars pedigree, revealing that this 1970 Chevelle Super Sport was one of 1336 Super Sports originally built at Oshawa assembly plant and sold at Capitol Motors LTD of Hartford, CT.

My Chevelle has earned a spot on Legendary Auto Interiors 2021 calendar month of December, Dale Mcintosh's Chevelle stuff website car of the month for Sept 2019, Sept 2020, and November 2021, and Classic 1970 Chevelles calendar.

The 1970 Chevelle has a one-year styling and was the last of the high horsepower classics. Everyone seems to remember growing up with someone who had one or owned one themselves. This car gets lots of thumbs up when I take her out for a spin.
